Recently had the opportunity to read this great book. As someone who has a short attention span and doesn't enjoy reading books in their entirety, I was blown away by this book. So many short compelling stories that make it a very enjoyable and a fast read. I feel like I know John on a personal level after reading this book and can't wait to read his next piece, should there be one.
This book has it all history, comedy, and edge of your seat suspense.
Great read! Sweet light hearted set of stories about life!
Been there, done that, and can relate to so much of what John shares in this little glimpse into his life, his journey of faith, the trials of corporate life, and the struggle to put family first. Eight months will take you for a leisurely drive through the countryside, then leave you hanging to find out what happens next. Quick and easy read.
A great collection of stories that come together to give the reader an honest, raw, humble reflection on some of John's life. I found my self laughing and nodding my head along with many of the stories about raising kids, tearing up at those moments that make us all question whether we are making the right decisions, and impressed with his commitment to his faith while, at the same time, acknowledging he is not perfect. To lay it all out in a very relatable book, is commendable. I recommend this book to anyone, we should all be able to find a bit of ourselves in this kind man who values his family and his faith above all else.
[Full disclosure our daughter married one of John’s sons] I read a lot and I love autobiographies, though in this case I put autobiography in quotation marks because it is not the usual kind of recounting of a life. John crafts a description of becoming more and more alive. Valdez combines two kinds of storytelling stories from his world at home and stories from the road. Intentionally or not this results in two unique voices that harmonize well. At home he sounds like a happier version of Kurt Vonnegut; on the road his storytelling reminded me of Mark Twain. Perhaps my enjoyment was enhanced because I know the primary characters but it’s more than that. John celebrates life, and the people he includes are all part of the party—and also the drama attendant to every gathering. I liked the book. It also reminded me I need to be more intentional about spending time with him.
The book is captivating from the beginning. It is a perfectly insightful and entertaining look at the struggles of working as corporate drone, and the joys and challenges to be found when you choose to prioritize the things that matter most. The characters are vivid and the story universal. Great read.
